About
The last track of the EP and arguably the best.
However, it’s a really depressing track that’s bundled up in a stadium-rock bow. I love it, it feels SO easy to sing. If you can’t tell I’m absolutely bursting to play this one live!
The song itself is about the loss-of-love due to death. All that love from One In A Million has gone and now only despair & grief is left.

Cry I noticed an absence a miserable substance from you
Stop the car it’s gone on too far I’m bored of driving this pain
So dress me up in posh clothes, oh no! (oh no)
If you knew what I was going through you wouldn’t go.
If you knew what I was going through you wouldn’t go.
If you knew what I was going through…
And this church has done this a thousand times you’re almost insignificant
I’m sorry for your loss, but the next one’s in reception. I’ve gotta go.
Cry I noticed an absence a miserable substance from you (Y-YOU, Y-YOU)
Stop the car it’s gone on too far I’m bored (I’m so bored!) of driving this pain
So dress me up in posh clothes, oh no! (oh no)
If you knew what I was going through you wouldn’t go.
If you knew what I was going through you wouldn’t go.
At least I’d hope so
The world still turns, but let me let you go.
If you knew what I was going through you wouldn’t go.

The writing process
By this point I had written the previous four tracks and felt the EP was a little slow so I wanted the last track to be guitar-driven and fast. After the build-up it only stops to be depressing for a few lines before bouncing back into the cathartic verses.
This is also the only track I wrote on my acoustic guitar first before putting it onto Logic to record. I was feeling a little down one evening and I just started with the word: Cry.
The song is repetitive and a bit short, but I was going for the Mr Brightside effect – where the lyrics are easy to sing. It would be a dream come true to play Church at a show and have the crowd screaming it with me. Due to the pandemic I haven’t played any of these songs live yet.

Other notes
- Apart from Mr Brightside the other main influence on the track is The 1975’s – I Always Wanna Die
- This song was going to be called Emo Parade 3, but I kept calling it Church by accident – so much that it stuck.
- This is my favourite track on the record.
- I wasn’t going to make this song a single, but since I loved it so much I felt like I had to make a big deal out of it.
- I’ve only experience one death in my lifetime (a friend committed suicide in 2011). Church (in particular the middle verse) is an amalgamation of several things that I noticed while dealing with the grief.
